What is a hedge?
Hedge is a kind of regular planting form, which is closely planted by shrubs or small arbors in a row spacing,
planted in single or double rows, and closely combined. In landscape design, hedges can be trimmed into
various shapes according to the needs of landscape design, and can be combined with different tree species
to improve the ornamental effect of the landscape, which is common in European style.
Functions of Hedges in Landscape Design
Hedges can beautify the environment, reduce noise, enclose the site, screen or guide the line of sight to the
focus of the scenery. As the background of fountains, statues, small gardens and other facilities, hedges play
the following roles in the landscape:
1) Enclosure function
In garden design, hedges are often used as the border for prevention. Barbed hedges, high hedges, and iron
barbed wire can be added in the hedges. The hedges can better guide tourists to choose the tour route, and
visit according to the indicated range. The places where tourists are prohibited from passing can be enclosed
by hedges.
2) Landscape background
In garden design, hedge trees are often pruned into various green walls as the background of fountains and
statues. Their height should generally be commensurate with the height of fountains and statues. The color
should be dark green trees without reflection. Hedges as the background of flower border are generally
evergreen high hedges and middle hedges.
3) Zoning and barrier vision
In landscape design, hedges or green walls are often used to divide the area or screen the line of sight into
different functional spaces. For example, the outdoor theater, children's playground and quiet rest area are
separated. The greatest advantage of this design is to reduce mutual interference. In this case, it is better to use
evergreen trees to form a green wall higher than the line of sight to achieve better isolation effect.
